"We All Wanted to be Cowboys" 2020-2021"What is it about a horse that makes children want to grow up to be cowboys? What is it about the Wild West that attracts our imagination and fantasies? It’s hard to put your finger on exactly, but there is a sense of timelessness that still enchants people of all ages.
Whether we grew up watching cowboy movies, playing with toy horses, or pretending to be cowboys, we all share a love and fascination for the Wild West. The cowboy and his horse have been an inspiration for me throughout my childhood, but especially in my artwork! When I was younger, all I wanted to do was draw and paint pictures of my favorite Breyer Horse models. For this exhibition, I have taken that same concept using my toy horse models and developed it into a series of fine artworks that capture the wild action of the seemingly untamable horse and the thrill of the cowboy’s daily adventures! Inspired by the great American Western artist Frederic Remington, my work is intended to look more traditional with my stylistic approach. To reflect the grit and rugged nature of the cowboy, I decided to paint exclusively with palette knives and to draw on textured paper. My series of bronco sculptures were made focusing specifically on the movement and figure of the wild, untamable horse. These sculptures are also a tribute to my childhood hero, Roy Rogers, with each of them named after his most famous movies. I also included some decorative pyrography embellishments inspired by the elegant silver engravings on Roy Roger’s pistol set. Most importantly, I want my viewers to connect with my artwork on a more personal level. My intent is for viewers to be able to imagine themselves as the ones present in my paintings and drawings, whether they’re herding cattle, breaking a bronco, or taking a leisure walk down a mountain pass." -McCall Greenlee |
